My name is Kala and I am a Dermagraphic Artist. I do a variety of work from a simple black art on an arm to full color custom artwork covering an entire back. In the past five years, I have grown in my work from doing the mundane and fun tattoos to tattoos rich in symbology and meaning. While conferring with clients, I awakened to the call of the ritual tattoo artist. As I researched this art form, I discovered a rich history of tattoos, the people who wore them and the people who created them. The more I learned, the more I felt the pull of something akin to an ancestral calling.
In 1997, I dedicated myself to creating a modern day process or "ritual" by tattooing my clients who had something to commemorate.
This year I introduced "Rituals In Art" a six week workshop designed to bring about the rebirth of the ritual tattoo. In this workshop, people learn the origins and intentions of ritual tattoo, who got then where they got then and for what purpose they were received.
During the course of the workshop, each person picks out a small are design or "piece" that had significance to a milestone or event in their life. The piece is worked up by Kala, meditated on, discussed and re-evaluated throughout the workshop. On the last day, with all participants supporting each other, the piece is transformed into a permanent commemoration of that person's life journey. In a sacred space, the tattoo is applied.
Participants in the workshop will be educated, empowered and will be given the opportunity to create a lasting reminder of events that helped build who they are , so they will never forget whence they came.
I hope you enjoy my pages here and I welcome any questions you may have. Next time you find yourself wanting to commemorate a great moment or transition in your life... consider the method of the ancients.... Consider tattooing.
Blessed Be!
